Today's Style Inspiration: Tan Leather and Denim

Mar19

John Varvatos' 8th Annual Stuart House Benefit - Arrivals

Lovin' Miss Zoe's simple and chic look.  Of course, I'm in love with the leopard print shoes, but that tan leather jacket really stands out against those skinny jeans. Blue and brown are an awesome combo!

Hope

Mar16

For we are saved by hope, but hope that is seen is not hope:  for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?  But, if we hope for that we see not, then with patience do we wait for it.  Romans 8:24-25

Spring 2011 Trend Series: CORAL!!!!

Mar10

Okay, ladies. One of the hottest colors on the Spring 2011 runways and in almost every store right now is coral. Some folks call it "melon", some call it "bright orange-y pink", but most people call it coral. And it is making it's mark EVERYWHERE, from lipstick to tops to shoes. It's definitely one of the "it" colors as spring rapidly approaches. BUT, how can you wear it? I'M GLAD YOU ASKED.

Try on various shades and different items. The brighter shades of coral look great on darker skin. But, some coral can be so neon and showy that it might tend to overwhelm lovely porcelain skin. So, try some of the ideas shown below. It's a great way to add a bit of color to winter's neutral palette. And if you're looking to stand out a bit more, try pairing this awesome color with turquoise jewelry.

NM Exclusive Ultra Lightweight Cashmere Scarf, Hot Coral

Kenneth Jay Lane turquoise and coral cabochon chandelier earrings

OPI Nail Lacquer, Conga-Line Coral

ASOS Cheesecloth Bandeau Mini Dress

$35.86

at Asos

Halston Floral-Print Maxi Dress

Oh, this last one is a beautiful Halston maxi-dress. Be still my heart. I hope you ladies enjoyed this. Hopefully it will inspire you to go get some of your own. Maybe it will help Spring get here sooner if we go ahead and dress for it (I wish).

Happy Styling!

His Style File: Valentine's Day DO'S AND DONT'S

Feb12

Alright, fellas. This one is for you. Tonight and over the next couple of days, many of you will be trying to woo that special girl. So, I couldn't leave you hangin' and wondering what to wear tonight. If she's a special girl, then you should have no problem taking the time to look like you actually care. Fashion shouldn't be about putting on some sort of fake image to make her like you. That's not love. What you wear should simply show that you're willing to put in the effort to show her who you are, your heart, and how much you care about her. So, check out this top five list of things you can do to give her a lasting impression.

1. KEEP IT SIMPLE
A great pair of jeans and a button down shirt or a sweater is really all you need to start if you're a bit fashion-challenged. Men's fashion can be very minimal and very simple. It's the details that women see (and that's what I want to help you with). So, don't wear anything that's going to make you extremely uncomfortable just because it's trendy. If you like simple, don't get a shirt with a loud print or "Affliction" written all over the back with sequins and stuff. You know you will just end up looking and feeling crazy. If you're uncomfortable, she will be, too.

Button Flap Chest Pocket Shirt

2. NO TAPERED JEANS
Speaking of jeans, get a pair of DARK WASHED jeans. These tend to look a little more dressy. No holes in them. And make sure they are not tapered. How can you tell? Lay your jeans on the bed. If the ankle is much smaller than the thigh area, your jeans are tapered. Solve the problem by taking the jeans to the nearest thrift store and heading to the mall for dark washed boot cut or wide-leg jeans. Check out the pic below.

3. NO TENNIS SHOES
Fellas, girls pay attention to the details. So, if you wear your gym shoes or shoes you would wear to cut the grass, she's going to notice. You don't have to wear any of those really uncomfortable dress shoes. But, check out some of the options below. They look nice AND you won't be falling all over yourself in shoes you're not used to wearing.

John Varvatos Star USA "Sid" Strap Boots with inside zipper

4. NO PLEATED FRONT PANTS/KHAKIS
Gentlemen, if you own any of these pants, please refer to step number two. These must be taken to a thrift store before I show up at your door, smack you with them and take them away from you....hahaha. These are terrible. Please don't wear them. They aren't flattering on most body shapes and they are a huge red flag to every woman that you are stuck in the fashion past. Flat front pants only, PLEASE.

Fitted Stretch Cotton Button-Down Collar Shirt

$59.90

5. BE YOURSELF.
This is the most important tip of them all. Don't overdo it. Be yourself so that she can get to know who you really are and you can get to know her for who she is. It's simple.

So, with or without a date on this totally made-up holiday, be true to yourself. Don't put on fake airs to get some girl's attention. If she's the one, she'll love you for who you really are and laugh at all of your silly jokes.

Tons of love!

Happy Fashion Week, Everyone!

Seen Around Lincoln Center Day 1 - Fall 2011 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

Today marks the first official day of New York Fashion Week. Aw Yeah! So, if you're not familiar with NYFW (for short), it is the semi-annual event that now occurs in Lincoln Center. It was previously held in Bryant Park, but moved to Lincoln Center last year. The picture above shows an awesome view of the whole setup. Various designers have runway shows where buyers, celebrities, and other fashion elite are able to attend by invitation only. (I still haven't received mine, but a sistah is workin' on it. haha). This fashion event is also held in Paris, London and Milan. Also, please note that the fashion calendar is a season ahead. So, NYFW LAST September actually showcased Spring and Summer 2011. Subsequently, the clothing being shown now in Lincoln Center is Fall/Winter 2011 apparel. Got it? Good! So, warm up your 'oohs' and 'aahs' while we take a look at some of the trends for Fall.

Everyone is noticing that the 70's seem to be making a bit of a comeback with a bit of a renewed vibe. Neutrals continue to stay on trend, but richer shades are coming in to vogue such as this rust shade shown below. Crop tops and wide-leg pants seem to be turning heads this fall, too.

And for those of us who love olive green, don't fret. The pieces you currently have in your closet will still carry you through next fall to continue your decidedly utilitarian theme. Just update with feminine accents to keep the look soft.

And ya'll know a sistah is a sucka for fabric that flows. Check out the maxi skirt and silk top shown below from Richard Chai.

So, that's my summary of day 1. Maybe it will give you some style inspiration before it finally warms up and we head into Spring.

Much love,
Ebony
